hell garden/buddhist temple

While in Nan, Thailand, we visited a wat. Along the inside walls are picture stories. They are unreadable to the average visitor but do include some interesting images. There is an extremely large statue of Buddha made from gold in the center, with an alter in front of it for offerings. Sadly, many Thais believe coming to the temple for worship is a necessary part of their spiritual life. It is a very grounding experience to watch as people bow and worship this lifeless object they call a god. After being in Thailand for almost five months now, I've been able to visit a handful of wats. This was the first one to include an outer building called the hell Garden. In it are more statues of bodies that are being tormented for sins committed in past live(s). Some of the statues were disturbing.
